IMPORTANT: These steps apply to Windows 10/11 only.
Common Symptoms
This guide is intended for issues such as:
- Minecraft Launcher takes a long time to open
- Infinite loading screen
- Blank or black launcher window
- Xbox sign-in hangs or fails
- Launcher only opens after multiple attempts
- Launcher works on hotspot but not home Wi-Fi
Step 1 — Rule Out the Basics
1. Check Internet & System Resources
Run a speed test using speed.cloudflare.com.
Then open Task Manager and confirm:
- CPU usage is not maxed out
- Memory usage is reasonable
- Disk usage is not stuck at 100%
If system resources and internet performance look normal, continue to the next steps.
2. Restart the PC
A full restart clears hung background processes and temporary launcher issues.
After rebooting, try opening Minecraft Launcher again before continuing.
3. Try Launching as Administrator
Right-click Minecraft Launcher and select:
Run as Administrator
This can resolve permission or Xbox authentication issues.
4. Test on a Mobile Hotspot
Connect your PC to a mobile hotspot and try launching Minecraft.
- If the launcher opens quickly on hotspot but slowly on your normal network, the issue is likely related to your ISP, router, DNS, or network software.
- If the issue happens on both networks, continue below.
Step 2 — Fix Xbox / Gaming Services Issues
Minecraft Launcher depends heavily on Xbox Gaming Services.
If the Xbox app is also slow, stuck loading, or unable to sign in, Gaming Services is often the cause.
5. Check Microsoft Store Updates
Open Microsoft Store → Library → Get updates
Install all available updates for:
- Minecraft Launcher
- Xbox app
- Gaming Services
Then restart the launcher.
6. Check if Gaming Services Is Running
Open Task Manager and search for:
xboxappservicesIf no related Xbox or Gaming Services processes appear, Gaming Services may be corrupted or missing.
7. Reinstall Gaming Services
Open PowerShell as Administrator and run these commands one at a time:
Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.GamingServices | Remove-AppxPackage -AllUsersstart ms-windows-store://pdp/?productid=9MWPM2CQNLHNThe Microsoft Store will open to the Gaming Services page.
Reinstall Gaming Services, then restart your PC.
These steps only reinstall Microsoft Gaming Services and will not remove Minecraft worlds, saves, or accounts.
8. Repair or Reset Minecraft Launcher
Go to:
Settings → Apps → Installed Apps → Minecraft Launcher → Advanced Options
Try:
- Repair
- If that fails, Reset
Then launch Minecraft again.
Step 3 — Fix Slow Loading on Your Network
If hotspot testing improved performance, your network configuration is likely causing the delay.
9. Switch to Google DNS
Go to:
Settings → Network & Internet → Your Connection → Edit DNS
Set manually:
IPv4 Preferred: 8.8.8.8
IPv4 Alternate: 8.8.4.4
IPv6 Preferred: 2001:4860:4860::8888
IPv6 Alternate: 2001:4860:4860::8844Save changes and restart the launcher.
10. Flush DNS Cache
Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run:
ipconfig /flushdnsThen restart Minecraft Launcher.
11. Temporarily Disable VPNs
VPN software can slow or interrupt Microsoft/Xbox authentication services.
Temporarily disable:
- VPN clients
- Secure DNS software
- Traffic filtering tools
Then test the launcher again.
12. Check for Killer Wi-Fi Software
Search installed apps for:
- Killer Intelligence Center
- Killer Control Center
This software can throttle or interfere with connections to Microsoft services even when internet speed tests look normal.
If installed:
- Disable network prioritization features, or
- Uninstall the software completely
Your Wi-Fi adapter will continue working normally without it.
Optional Advanced Checks
Check Xbox Service Status
If Xbox authentication services are down, Minecraft Launcher may load slowly or fail to sign in.
Check:
Verify Windows Time & Date
Incorrect system time can break Xbox authentication.
Go to:
Settings → Time & Language → Date & Time
Enable:
- Set time automatically
- Set time zone automatically
