How to Change Your Minecraft Version (Java Edition)

Learn the steps to easily switch between different versions of Minecraft Java Edition for optimal gameplay and compatibility.

1️⃣ Open Minecraft Launcher

Open the Minecraft Launcher


2️⃣ Make Sure You’re in the Java Tab

On the left side, click Minecraft: Java Edition


3️⃣ Click “Installations”

At the top of the screen, click Installations


4️⃣ Click “New Installation”

Click the New Installation button.


5️⃣ Name the Installation

At the top, give it a name that helps you identify it.

Examples:

  • 1.20.4 Server
  • 1.19.2 Mods
  • 1.16 Old Version

6️⃣ Choose the Version

Click the Version dropdown menu.

Select the release version you need
(example: release 1.20.4)

⚠️ Choose one that says release, not snapshot (unless specifically told to use a snapshot).


7️⃣ Click “Create”

Click Create at the bottom.


8️⃣ Launch the Version

Go back to the Play tab.
Use the version dropdown (bottom left) to select your new installation.
Click Play.
