If you’re unable to join online games, connect to multiplayer servers, or stay connected during gameplay on your Meta Quest headset, the issue may be related to your home network configuration.

This guide walks you through common causes and step-by-step solutions.

Common Symptoms

You may be experiencing a network configuration issue if you see:

  • Stuck on “Connecting”
  • Failed to join server
  • Frequent disconnects
  • Multiplayer works on one internet connection but not another
  • Game works when using a mobile hotspot but not your home Wi-Fi

Step 1: Quick Diagnostic — Try a Different Network

Before adjusting your router:

  1. Connect your Quest to a mobile hotspot.
  2. Try launching the same online game.

If it works on hotspot:

  • The issue is likely your home network or ISP.

If it still doesn’t work:

  • The issue may be headset software, Wi-Fi signal strength, or a game-specific problem.

Step 2: Restart Your Network

Many connectivity problems are temporary.

  1. Power off your Quest.
  2. Unplug your modem and router.
  3. Wait 60 seconds.
  4. Plug modem back in and wait until fully online.
  5. Plug router back in.
  6. Turn your Quest back on and reconnect to Wi-Fi.

Step 3: Check for Double NAT

Double NAT can prevent multiplayer connections.

You may have:

  • An ISP modem/router combo
  • A separate Wi-Fi router connected behind it

How to check:

  • Log into your router settings.
  • Look for “NAT Type” or “WAN IP.”
  • If your router’s WAN IP starts with:
    • 10.x.x.x
    • 192.168.x.x
    • 100.64.x.x

You may be behind double NAT or carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT).

Fix options:

  • Put your ISP modem into Bridge Mode
  • Or put your personal router into Access Point Mode

If unsure, contact your ISP for assistance.

Step 4: Enable UPnP

Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) allows your Quest to automatically open the ports required for multiplayer gaming.

  1. Log into your router.
  2. Find UPnP (often under Advanced or NAT settings).
  3. Enable UPnP.
  4. Save settings and restart your router.

This resolves many multiplayer issues.

Step 5: Check Firewall Settings

Some routers use strict firewalls that block gaming traffic.

Temporarily:

  • Disable advanced firewall or SPI firewall features
  • Test the game

If this resolves the issue, re-enable the firewall and adjust settings instead of leaving it fully disabled.

Step 6: Change DNS Settings

Some ISPs use restrictive or unstable DNS servers.

Try setting your router’s DNS to:

  • Cloudflare: 1.1.1.1
  • Google: 8.8.8.8

Then restart your router.

Step 7: Check for Carrier-Grade NAT (CGNAT)

Some ISPs (especially mobile and budget providers) do not assign a public IPv4 address.

This can interfere with real-time multiplayer games.

How to check:

  1. Log into your router.
  2. Find the WAN IP address.
  3. Compare it to the IP shown on a website like “What Is My IP.”

If they are different, you may be behind CGNAT.

Solution:

Contact your ISP and ask:

“Do I have a public IPv4 address? If not, can one be assigned to my account?”

Some providers offer this free or for a small fee.

Step 8: Test With a VPN (Advanced)

If multiplayer works when using a VPN on your network but not without it, your ISP may be:

  • Blocking or filtering gaming traffic
  • Routing traffic inefficiently

In this case:

  • Contact your ISP for assistance
  • Request a public IP address
  • Or consider alternative service options

Wi-Fi Signal Best Practices for Quest

Even if NAT is correct, poor Wi-Fi can cause disconnects.

For best results:

  • Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi instead of 2.4 GHz
  • Stay in the same room as your router
  • Avoid mesh node hopping during gameplay
  • Reduce interference from other devices

When to Contact Your ISP

Contact your ISP if:

  • You suspect CGNAT
  • VPN fixes the issue
  • You cannot change router settings
  • Your ISP modem does not allow bridge mode

Summary

Most multiplayer connection issues on Meta Quest are caused by:

  • Double NAT
  • CGNAT
  • Strict router firewalls
  • Disabled UPnP
  • ISP-level filtering

In many cases, enabling UPnP or adjusting NAT settings resolves the issue quickly.

If you continue to experience problems, contact Meta Support with:

  • Your ISP name
  • Router model
  • NAT type (if known)
  • Whether hotspot or VPN testing changed the behavior

This will help support assist you more efficiently.
