Meta Quest VR: Parent Guide to Safety & Permissions

Goals of this guide

To help families confidently support their child’s use of Meta Quest VR by:

  • Understanding parental controls and account setup
  • Supporting safe and appropriate online interactions
  • Aligning home settings with Mud Club expectations

Mud Club uses VR as a supported, therapist-guided environment, and these steps help extend that safety into your home setup.

Why Parental Setup Matters

Meta Quest is an online platform with:

  • Social features (voice chat, multiplayer games)
  • App downloads and purchases
  • Friend connections

Setting up parental controls ensures your child can participate safely and appropriately during and outside of sessions.

✅ Use a Parent-Managed Account

For teens:

  • Create a Meta account for your child
  • Link it to your parent account using Meta Family Center

This allows you to:

  • Approve purchases
  • Monitor usage
  • Manage privacy and safety settings

Key Safety Settings to Review

We recommend reviewing these settings before starting:

🔒 Privacy Settings

  • Set profile visibility to Friends Only or Private
  • Limit who can:
    • See your child online
    • Send friend requests

🎤 Voice & Communication

  • Restrict voice chat to:
    • Friends only or
    • Approved users

👉 In Mud Club sessions, communication is guided by therapists in structured environments.

👥 Friend Management

  • Review and approve friend requests
  • Remove unknown users

🛒 Purchases & App Access

  • Enable purchase approvals
  • Review installed apps regularly

⏱️ Time & Usage (Optional)

  • Set screen time expectations that work for your family
  • Use built-in tools if helpful

How Mud Club Uses VR 🕶️

During sessions:

  • Therapists guide all gameplay and interaction
  • Members join structured activities (in private lobbies)
  • Voice communication is used only within session context

Outside of sessions:

  • Some games may allow open interaction
  • We recommend parental supervision or agreed-upon limits
